Messini (Greek: Μεσσήνη; known as Νησί/Nisi before 1867) is a charming town, a municipal unit (dimotiki enotita), and the administrative seat (edra) of the wider municipality (dimos) of Messini. Located in the heart of the Messenia regional unit (see #3 on map), within the Peloponnese—one of Greece's 13 regions—Messini offers visitors a blend of modern Greek life and historical depth. It is located about 3 km from the Messinian Gulf and 10 km west of Kalamata
The "Province" of Messini (Επαρχία Μεσσήνης) existed until 2006. It was abolished as part of Greece's administrative modernization.

Don't Miss ancient Messene. Just 15 km north of modern Messini lies the stunning archaeological site of Ancient Messene. Located at the foot of Mount Ithome, this once-flourishing city-state is now a vast, partially restored open-air museum. It overlaps with the small village of Mavrommati and is a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
Tucked away in the Polylimnio Gorge near Kazarma village in Messinia, are the Polylimnio Waterfalls, a series of cascading waterfalls and turquoise pools—often referred to as a “hidden paradise” by those who discover them. Visitors hike through lush greenery, olive groves, and shaded forest paths to reach the waterfalls. The trail is moderately challenging, taking about 20–30 minutes, and includes wooden bridges, stone steps, and some slightly steep sections.
